July 2019 Meeting

July meeting was full of colorful quilts, a well researched presentation about “Kurak” – Nomad Quilts from Central Asia by Elmira Aleynikova. It was very interesting to learn about the patterns used which are very close to the traditional blocks and the conventional Uzbek colours are very close to African Masaai colours which are red, black and white.

Amara Charitble Trust And it’s founders were introduced to our members. Amara wishes to collaborate with KQG to make Reusable Sanitary Napkins to enable more girls to go to school on their period days.
https://amaratrust.org/ Our members plan to hold workshops to cut the fabrics to make kits to sew. The target is to reach 350 pads to make 50 kits to be distributed in October to a school run by Amara Trust in Rural Kenya.

Manjushree Saudagar stands very proud with her very first sampler Quilt. We all loved it.

Lakhbir Virdee pieced and quilted a beautiful Bargello Quilt and Jasvinder Phull keeps mesmerising us with her gorgeous bags. Jasvinder promises to hold a workshop in September for the same.

Salama Mamas have come a long way. Its beautiful how they keep evolving and trying new techniques keeping their signature style intact.

It was followed by a live demonstration from Rohini Desai, Incharge Education, about Foundation Paper Piecing and a hands on workshop was organized to practice the same.

We would like extend a huge THANKS to Sheryl Fowler for very kindly making all the kits and to Raji and Neela for staying on to help. The practice blocks will be turned into baby quilts to be donated to a trusted charitable trust.
