Classes on quilt making from beginner to advanced levels are taught occasionally during the year by experienced teachers. From time to time we arrange classes by visiting teachers from South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe.
East Meets West
Reverse Applique Guatemalan Mola Quilts with Optional Japanese Sashiko Embellishment

The payment will need to be made by the 4th of December or you spot will be lost.
Students design and construct an original small multi-layered reverse appliqué mola quilt suitable for wall hanging or cushion cover. Subjects covered include freehand template making, machine basting, principals of good composition, edge finishes, and a special demonstration of sashiko stitching as embellishment.
This course will be offered on Jan 16th or Jan 17th. There needs to be at least 16 people so sign up at the Nov. 27th meeting or contact the Chairman to book your spot. If you can only attend on a Friday or a Saturday then sign up for that day. If you could come either day then please sign up for both days. The day with the most people will be chosen.
Student Supply List
Note on fabrics: Use INEXPENSIVE and/or OLD and/or UGLY materials, not your best stuff! This is a class to teach you how to do something. You WILL make mistakes during the learning process. Save your best fabrics for future projects when you know better what you are doing.
To make one small quilt, 18" x 24/36":
- Set of 3-5 fabrics, loosely coordinated, nice range of values, some solids, some prints - each piece at least 1 meter (this includes enough fabric for optional border, backing and binding)
- Batting - 1/4" thick, preferably cotton, 24" x 36"
- Selection of marking tools - tailor's chalk or wax, disappearing or washable fabric marking pen, pencil
- Straight pins
- Regular safety pins about 1" long (bent safety pins if available) OR quilt tacking gun and tacks, OR needle and thread for basting or tacking (can be done on machine)
- Dressmaker shears (SHARP), optional small sharp bladed scissors to cut through fabrics one layer at a time
- Sewing machine and regular sewing kit (machine cleaned, oiled, wiped free of oil and in good service, extra machine needles - 80/12 and 90/14); electrical extension cord, transformer if needed, plug adaptors
- Walking foot for sewing machine
- Selection of threads to match and contrast with fabrics selected
- 6-8 sheets of lightweight stiff cardboard, acetate or other plastic material suitable for making templates
- Paper scissors for cutting templates
- Rotary cutting mat, knife and sharp blade(s)
- Optional: One hand sewing needle, slender enough to penetrate fabrics easily, about 2" long, with eye large enough to take one strand of standard cotton crochet yarn
- Optional: Selection of color coordinated embellishments - beads, decorative threads, cords or trims
